Where leaks start
It's rarely the middle of a shingle
Most roof leaks start at flashing, vent boots, valleys and edges, not in the middle of a shingle. Water gets in where the roof meets something else:
- Flashing where the roof meets a wall or a chimney
- The rubber boots around vent pipes
- Valleys, where two roof planes meet and water runs hardest
- Edges and gutters that stay wet
- Shingles lifted or torn off by wind
- Shingle edges pried up by moss

What to do when you spot a leak
- Put a bucket under it and move what you can out of the way.
- Take a few photos of the stain or the drip. They help us find the source.
- Stay off the roof. A wet roof is dangerous, and it's not worth it.

Roof repair questions
How do you find where a leak is coming from?
From the roof and the attic, not from the ceiling. We check the flashing at walls and chimneys, the vent boots, the valleys and the shingles above the stain, then follow the water trail in the attic back to where it comes in. Ask us for photos of what we find.
Can a leak wait until summer?
A leak doesn't stay the same size. Every storm pushes more water into the same spot, and wet wood and insulation don't dry out in an Oregon winter. It's almost always cheaper to deal with it sooner.
Is it a repair or a replacement?
If the rest of the roof is in good shape, a leak is usually a repair. If the shingles are worn out across the whole roof, patching one spot just moves the problem. We look at the roof and tell you which one it is.
